The main question I get when I tell people I am majoring in digital marketing is “what’s that?” People hear the “digital” part and think it is a lot more complicated than it actually is. For those majoring in it as well, I feel your pain in thoroughly trying to explain it, but for those are unaware, here is a breakdown.
Although regular marketing is still appealing and can exist just as much as digital marketing, digital marketing is being used more and more each day. Being in a current pandemic only increases the amount of digital marketing being used as people are working, attending school, shopping, and exercising from home. From a simple Google search to a Youtube video search, everything is at your fingertips.
There are a number of endless possibilities for brands including email, video, social media, or any websites. Most businesses and brands these days have websites and online shopping options (if they didn’t already before the pandemic, they sure do now.) To add to that fact, businesses want to compete with their competitors so if they have a site, they will have one too.
Digital marketing gives anybody and everybody an opportunity to be creative and experiment with their online sites, as they want to stand out- billboards and printed ad’s do not bring as much attention to an average person’s eye like they used to considering we spend so much time on our phones, laptops, and tablets these days.
Today, a lot of customers are shopping online, so digital marketing is HUGE. Digital Marketing has replaced majority of traditional marketing’s tactics since it is designed in a way to reach todays consumers. Some ways to get in the same place as your consumers are: social media, SEO, blogs and email market, and advertising. You can use your digital marketing skills by just doing one of these things, or doing all! Together you will be able to make an efficient, easy-to-operate digital marketing machine. If you’re overwhelmed at first, take it step by step and use the internet to search things you are unaware of. After all, everything is online now.
In a shorter explanation, digital marketing is the use of internet to reach consumers.
That’s it, it’s that simple.
